LaurieL’s post production
ONE-ON-ONE (or 2:1) NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY TRAINING WITH LaurieL – Full day $1600
This is an intensive, one-on-one (or 1:2), hands-on training. We cover so much in these sessions, that we only work on newborn posing the entire day. These are not group classes where you have to share your time and questions with a dozen other people, fighting for your spot to get the perfect shot. I know that some of the best newborn workshops out there are taught by two people working together. What a wonderful way to get great baby poses! But what if you don’t have the luxury of having another set of hands posing the baby while you click away? Most of us don’t. LaurieL will teach you careful, patient positioning, including the head propped up on hands shot – which we NEVER composite. After teaching you…I will have YOU posing the baby until you master it. You will not get this kind of ‘hands-on’ in a group session. You will watch me explain, prepare, pose and shoot, and then YOU will be posing and photographing. I’ve done enough of these training’s that I know there really isn’t time to give you all the 1:1, hands-on time you need to master every pose I want to teach you, and then have time for post production the same day. The newborn hands-on training takes a full day. If you also want to learn post production on newborn images, you should be sure to include a separate day of of training on this. Please know that LaurieL shoots in a studio using studio lighting. This is not a natural light class. In this session, we will cover:
Camera Settings – ISO, Shutter, Aperture
White Balance
The best lenses to use
Lighting – positioning and settings
Must haves for a successful session
What to say and talk to the parents about before the session starts
Getting it right SOC (straight out of the camera)
How to make your studio lights look like natural light
Posing on mom
Posing on dad
Posing on siblings
Beanbag posing
Chin Prop posing (no, I don’t do composites on these)
Stork Sling posing
Basket posing
Wrapping babies
Keeping baby asleep
Smooth transitioning between poses
Baby safety during the session
Back drops and floor drops that work best
Obtaining great props inexpensively
NOTE: (2:1 clients receive $100 off each, for each day of training)
POST PROCESSING – Full day, in LaurieL’s studio – Full day $800
FACT: Your digital editing skills alone can make or break your images! Taking the picture only gets you half way there. The other half happens in the digital darkroom.
If you think all those beautiful baby images are coming straight out of the camera (SOOC) that way…then you’re in for a real surprise. I can assure you that the ‘perfectness’ of newborn photography images is done more in Photoshop than in camera. As a photographer and graphic designer, I’d feel comfortable saying that every image you see on maternity and newborn photography websites have gone through digital editing. For the most part, extensive editing. Ever look at your images and think they are lacking the WOW you see in other photographers images? It’s may not be because you didn’t shoot the image well enough to get a GREAT final image. It may be that you are just lacking the post production skills to accomplish it. This workshop will include extensive digital image editing for maternity and newborn photography in PHOTOSHOP. Sit next to me while I show you how to polish your images, sharing with you some of the most popular Photoshop techniques used today. As with all my teaching…this will be hands-on. I will explain, and show you, and then you will be working on images yourself as I coach you. With 20 years of graphic design background, you can be assured that you will learn the techniques that will make YOUR work stand out from the rest. These workshops will be customized to YOU and your particular needs. You will leave this workshop with all the knowledge you need to create stunning maternity and newborn images, and a disk of LaurieL’s favorite Actions, which include all the Actions sold on the Maternity and Newborn Photography Prop Shop and more! In this FULL DAY session, we will cover:
First things first,…what you need to do with your images right away
Managing your images (this can be a nightmare unless you do it right!)
Color space
Correcting white balance issues
Correcting skin tones
How to get baby soft, creamy skin – but not over doing it (Babies are NOT made of plastic!)
Making eyes ‘pop’ – but not overdoing it
Adding DOF (depth of field)
Fading your background on blankets and also into your floor
Textures & Overlays
Blending Modes
Layer Masks
Actions (using them, and creating simple Actions to speed up your workflow)
Composites
Cropping an image, and why I never do it!
Speeding up your post processing time
Readying images for print, web & Facebook
Slenderizing your maternity clients
The flawless way to get rid of stretch marks
and more…

Hello! You can read what Mentoring options are available under the “Mentoring” section. It lists all classes and their prices. We can set up a time that works for you for a 1:1 class, or you can join a Group Class. Classes are listed on the Maternity and Newborn Photography Prop Shop store. We list the classes available each month…normally offering two classes a month. Simply purchase the classes on the store. Here’s a link: http://maternityandnewbornphotographypropshop.bigcartel.com/category/lessons
Hi Loidie! And sorry for my delayed response! There is no certain level that you need to be. Since my Mentoring is 1:1, I work at whatever level you are at, and bring you up from there!
Kimber…you have been more than a pleasure to work with and teach. I know you are going to do great things!! Thank YOU incredibly for your kind words. I truly appreciate them…and you taking the time to write them…
I had the privalaged to mentor with Laurie in December 2011. I chose her pregnancy/newborn 2-day package…nothing short of amazing!
A few months ago I needed a tune up so I took Laurie’s GROUP 1:1.
I was unable to stay for post processing…the missing link.
In May, during a pregnancy shoot, I had trouble with my lights. The mood and pose were there, but I was struggling with skin texture, highlights in the wrong places…etc.
I took Laurie’s 1:1 private on-line session and learned how to “rescue” my shoot.
I sent my troubled jpegs to her, I watched and learned, as Laurie guided me through this process.
Thank you Laurie!…I appreciate you.

Hi!, I’m from México and I’m interested on the Maternity and Newborn Photography Business Mentoring. I was wondering if you can teach this over skype or with emails?. Thanks =)
I teach Photoshop CS5 (or lower). I don’t know or use Elements. Sorry!
Hey, for your post processng mentoring session, what type of photoshop is required? I have elements and wasnt sure if you covered certain programs, or all. I can’t seem to find anyone who does PSE for mentoring.
Ok I’m studying this. I am going to take a workshop with someone early 2012. I need to NAIL NB, 3 mo & maternity. I also need a baby plan, marketing tools, presentation & delivery “fluff”.
I don’t feel I need any postprocessing. If I can get image right in camera, my workflow is pretty quick ! I’m in Asheville NC, what airport is close to you ? I’ll look @ flights.
Nicole…My Newborn Photography, Photoshop classes, and Running a Photography Business classes are open to anyone. The only classes I don’t offer to locals within 50 miles is my Maternity Photography classes.
Our ‘blocks’ of learning are not yet available. I’m working to get this done…and hope to have it available soon! I’ve got a LOT on my plate right now…and it’s taking a lot longer than I had hoped!
hi!
i am soooo interesting in learning from you but live nowhere near oregon and travelling is not really an option right now. so like kimberly a., i am wondering how the “block sessions” work.
I’m very interested on your availability for your workshops. Thank you for all the great tips on your blob for photographers. I love creamy baby skin and just purchased, Dream With Me. I can’t wait to try it along with some textures I also purchased. I hope to do the workshop with my sister Malia, who works with me with the newborns.
Look forward to hearing from you. Your work is beautiful!
Sincerely,
Carrie
Great Work!
I’m a brazilian baby photographer and I would love to take a workshop with you!
I’m considering next year!
Best regards from Brasil!
“Need a more affordable option? If the cost of traveling and paying for a full mentoring session is just not within your budget, check out our Digital Downloads section on our Blog where you can pick and choose the items you are most interested in learning. With our Digital Downloads, you are able to pay for ‘blocks’ of information, a bit at a time, and keep your costs within your budget. (This option will be available soon!)”
I was curious of this option was available yet? I am re-opening my photography business after some time off and some life changes in my personal life. I shot weddings for years, before I had to step away and I would really like to get into newborn and infant photography, so I was hoping that this might be an option for me to learn more about. Thank you Kimberly
Hello LaurieL,
I recently moved to Milwaukie, Oregon from Montana via Idaho. I am a mom of two and just gave birth to my second child two months ago. I have always loved taking photos, but want to really learn this business. I ADORE newborns and want to learn how to take really good photos of them. Plus, I want to learn how to take really good pictures of my children and not miss a second of them growing up. I noticed that your site said the mentoring session is not open to people in Portland. Do you consider my location as Portland? If so, is this restriction completely set in stone? I would love the opportunity to learn from an experienced photographer and I am really impressed with your work.
Warmest regards,
Nicole Seekell
